I have been through a long and interesting journey since I graduated high school in the spring of 2006. I enlisted in the Navy and started to broaden my horizon. After my term in the military ended I came back home and began to work. I have held many jobs but none that I really enjoyed. About a year after I decided I needed to go to college and better myself to get a great career, I chose to enroll at Corning Community College. I was skeptical at first – not really knowing what to expect – but shortly after beginning my classes I soon realized I had made the right decision.
I have heard most of my friends complain about other colleges having professors that don’t take the extra time to help themselves or have a difficult time finding a tutor, but not with CCC. Since I have been here, all of my professors are very eager to help students with any problems that they are having. It is also very easy to find help outside of the class if the professor is busy such as the Math Center, the Writing Center, the Learning Center and many other places around campus that focus only on the student’s problems.
I have chosen Computer Science as my major since I was an Information Technician in the Navy. Even though I have a slight background in computers I found myself struggling in my computer class. When I noticed my problems in this class I notified the professor of them, and we sat and discussed how I could improve in my weak areas. It was not long before I was set up with a tutor and still have frequent talks with my professor to maintain my improving skills.
Outside of the classroom I couldn’t be happier with my life at Corning. The staff at the college is very helpful with any questions you may have about anything going on with school events, financial aid, schedules and all other aspects of college life. I have also found a job as a Student Ambassador at CCC. I am currently working in the Social Media Department of Admissions. I work on the Internet sites that Corning has to offer including Facebook, Live Chat and our blog site. This is the best job I can imagine having; not only do I work on those specific aspects of the college, but I also have opportunities to work events and give tours, which are very interesting. I am much more social with other people, and I have learned the campus very well so I know where to go for questions or advice on a matter.
Even though my journey is far from over, I am very confident that my choice to enroll at Corning Community College may have been the smartest decision I’ve ever made. The fact that there is plenty of extra help if anyone needs it, or that the professors make as much effort as the students to improve skills, makes me feel that this is the only college that I will enjoy attending. My life has been an interesting journey, but now I feel that Corning Community College will be the best part of it.
